Gasol: Will consider Lakers, Bulls, Grizzlies and Spurs
Pau Gasol expects to have options this summer as an unrestricted free agent, but the list of teams he will consider signing with is small, according to comments he made to Marca.com translated by Basketball Insiders.
The 7-foot Spaniard could, of course, stay with pal Kobe Bryant and the Los Angeles Lakers, while other contenders like the Chicago Bulls and San Antonio Spurs pique his interest. The most fun option - the Memphis Grizzlies, where he could team with brother Marc - is something Gasol has considered, too.
This does raise the question, however, of how much Gasol is looking to earn this summer. He made $19.3 million this season and has estimated career earnings of $157 million, so he's not hard up for cash. However, he turns 34 as free agency opens, so this could be the last appreciable contract he can sign.
The Lakers have cap space this summer but can ill afford to give Gasol an eight-figure deal if they plan to add many other pieces around he and Bryant. Meanwhile, the Bulls could get under the cap by amnestying Carlos Boozer but may take a swing at Carmelo Anthony first, and the Grizzlies would only have significant room if Zach Randolph declined his $16.9 million player option.
The Spurs have a legendary frontcourt player in Tim Duncan, but should he retire or the franchise decide to make one last all-in push, perhaps Gasol makes sense as a tag-team partner.
In any case, it's clear that Gasol wants to win, so any rebuilding squads probably need not inquire.
