Report: Klay Thompson not enough, Wolves also seeking a 1st-round pick for Kevin Love
If you heard the trade rumors on Thursday and thought "wait, that's all they could get for Kevin Love?" like we did, a bit of sanity was introduced to the Kevin Love speculation late Thursday night.
The Minnesota Timberwolves are looking to acquire a future first round pick in any deal with the Golden State Warriors, in addition to Klay Thompson, according to a report from ESPN's Marc Stein.
That much seemed obvious when Love hit the market, but it hadn't been reported with this particular rumor. While Thompson is a nice player, he alone - or in concert with David Lee - pales to Love in terms of on-court impact. He will also get expensive in the coming years, eligible for a contract extension this summer or hitting restricted free agency in 2015.
The Wolves are also said to have interest in Harrison Barnes, and could look to unload Kevin Martin, who has three years and $21.3 million remaining on his deal, in a trade. The Warriors are said to be weighing whether they would be willing to give up Lee plus two assets for Love, which, not to editorialize, they absolutely should be.
While Boston and Denver have made inquiries about Love, too, Stein says that the Warriors "possess the most appealing combination of players who can make an immediate impact."
At the very least, the willingness to include Thompson on Golden State's part should allow for Minnesota to negotiate with other teams more aggressively ahead of next Thursday's NBA draft.
