Anthony Morrow will decline 2014-15 player option, become free agent
After spending a few months thinking it over, New Orleans Pelican shooting guard Anthony Morrow has decided to decline the 2014-15 option year on his contract and become an unrestricted free agent.
The team confirmed his decision to The Times Picayune on Thursday.
Morrow had been playing on a minimum contract and the option year was also for the minimum, commensurate with his level of service time, so there is essentially no financial risk for Morrow in hitting the market.
He's also coming off a decent bounce-back season after a disappointing 2012-13. In 76 games with the Pelicans, Morrow averaged 8.4 points in just 18.8 minutes, shooting 45.1 percent from long range. That latter point will be Morrow's key attribute on the market, as he's a 42.8 percent career 3-point shooter and should find plenty of shooting-starved suitors.
Still just 28, Morrow will be entering his seventh NBA season out of Georgia Tech this year.
It's possible that he could wind up back with the Pelicans despite their deep backcourt, though he will reportedly seek a multi-year deal at a significant raise, which could price him out of New Orleans' plans.
