According to Ramona Shelburne and Marc Stein of ESPN, New York Knicks forward Carmelo Anthony has informed the team, in writing, that he is opting out of his contract to become an unrestricted free agent. Had he chose to opt-in, Anthony would have made $23 million next season.

As noted in the report, Anthony can still re-sign with the Knicks if he chooses. If he does, he can earn up to $129 million over five years. If he opts for another destination, he can only earn as much as $96 million over four years.

Among Anthony's reported suitors are the Dallas Mavericks, Houston Rockets, Chicago Bulls and Miami Heat.

Last season, the 30-year-old Anthony posted per-game averages of 27.4 points and 8.1 rebounds per game. He also logged the highest Player Efficiency Rating of his career at 24.4.
