The Orlando Magic selected Arizona forward Aaron Gordon with the No. 4 overall pick in the 2014 NBA Draft on Thursday night.
Congratulations, Magic fans, you've been gifted a player we guarantee will immediately become a top-three in-game dunker in the league. But Gordon promises a lot more than just above-the-rim play, looking like a potential all-world defender thanks to his size, athleticism, and consistent effort.
Gordon can't really shoot - don't let his 35.6 percent mark from long range draw your eyes away from his 42.2 percent free throw shooting - which is a problem that will take some work and patience. He can be effective while his shot develops, though, leveraging transition offense and defensive acumen to make a difference from day one.
Gordon has the potential to complement Magic center Nikola Vucevic well, providing a more versatile and rangy frontcourt defender. He and Victor Oladipo form what should be a terrific defensive core, and the Magic are going to be a very difficult team to score on over the next few years.
On the other end, however, the Magic now have two cornerstones who aren't (yet) terrific offensive players in Oladipo in Gordon. There's a great deal of potential with this core, but it may take some patience, creativity and a supporting cast with some firepower. That could mean moving on from Mo Harkless or Tobias Harris, or are similarly limited, at least in terms of range.
When it comes to the draft for a rebuilding team, however, talent should always win out, and Gordon may very well turn out to be a top-four talent from this class. Acquire talent, fit the pieces together later.
