The Orlando Magic selected Croatian forward Dario Saric with the No. 12 overall pick in the 2014 NBA Draft on Thursday night.
While Saric is definitely a prospect worth being excited about, any enthusiasm needs to be tempered with a long-term outlook. That's because Saric recently signed a three-year deal in Turkey, one that doesn't provide him an out to the NBA until at least the 2016 offseason.
So for the Magic, that means Saric is a wait-and-see play, someone who won't count on the books and can be used as a trade chip over the next two seasons, similar to how the Chicago Bulls have waited on Nikola Mirotic while his name has been consistently floated in trade rumors.
If and when Saric comes stateside, the Magic have themselves a very talented wing player, someone capable of running an offense and filling the entire box score. If he develops improved range on his jumper by then, he could be a real problem for NBA defenses.
The Magic have some young, talented forwards that can hold down the fort while the team waits for Saric to come to Florida. When he does arrive, he'll be worth the wait for a Magic team that can pair him alongside Nikola Vucevic.
