The New York Knicks selected Wichita State forward Cleanthony Early with the No. 34 overall pick in the 2014 NBA Draft on Thursday night. Better late than never, right Early? He-yo!
At 23, Early is one of the most ready-to-contribute wings in the draft, so the Knicks can expect him to have an impact right away. He'll do so by playing a physical game based on size - he's big for a small forward - and athleticism, making him a tough check for many wings. What's more, Early complements the hustle aspects of his game with a smooth touch and an effective inside game, though he struggles some going outside-in.
New York will now have to determine if they see Early as a three, a four, or some form of combo forward, a decision that surely hinges on the future of Carmelo Anthony. In either case, Early's a nice find at No. 34 and should help on both ends of the floor.
If Anthony stays, Early should see reserve time at both forward spots, as the Knicks project to be a smaller team after trading away Tyson Chandler in a deal that landed them this pick. If Anthony walks, Early may find himself as an unexpected starter or heavily-used multi-position piece. He could also be used as trade bait if the Knicks try and work more deals to surround Anthony with talent, though their flexibility to do so remains questionable.
