The Charlotte Hornets selected Connecticut guard Shabazz Napier with the No. 24 overall pick in the 2014 NBA Draft on Thursday night.
All he does is win, win, win no matter what. That's the story for Napier, who is the rare two-time NCAA champion after providing support in 2011 and leading the Huskies himself in 2014. Naturally, teams were said to be enamored with Napier's toughness, leadership, and track record, with the Hornets obviously among them.
But Napier's more than intangibles, and should provide sound guard play immediately. He's an adept scorer from all over the floor, has a terrific handle, hits the glass and, most impressively given his size, he's a terrific defender. He's a bit undersized and is more of a scoring guard than a pure point guard, but at this point in the draft, a player with such an appreciable floor is a good get.
Napier's time as a member of the Hornets may not last long, as ESPN's Andy Katz reported that Napier's agent told him he'll be going to the Miami Heat in a trade.
Napier would have paired well with the team's ninth overall pick, Noah Vonleh, as players that could help the team get better now, but it wasn't to be.
