The New Orleans Pelicans selected Louisville point guard Russ Smith with the No. 47 overall pick in the 2014 NBA Draft on Thursday night.
Smith may be undersized at just 6-foot and 160 pounds, but there's plenty to like about the 23-year-old's game. He has a terrific first step and his one of the fastest players in the draft, making him a weapon on the move. He can also shoot the three, though that shot remains a bit inconsistent, and should be able to score at the next level despite his size disadvantage. There's a real chance he becomes a microwave man off the bench.
The Pelicans must think a lot of Smith, because they traded promising D-League guard Pierre Jackson to the Philadelphia 76ers to get him. Smith is an older rookie, and should be able to contribute right away. Like Jackson, Smith has a good scoring touch. He could conceivably pose as the replacement for guard Austin Rivers.
