Pelicans will not qualify Brian Roberts, who will become a UFA
Add one more name to the list of unrestricted free agent point guards for this summer. While it's not a top-heavy list, it's a deep one, and New Orleans Pelicans guard Brian Roberts is set to join the ranks.
That's because the team has decided not to extend him a qualifying offer, making him an unrestricted free agent. Roberts was expected to be a restricted free agent, but the team has decided that the $1.12 million qualifying offer is either too much for Roberts' services (in the event he signed it) or simply too valuable as cap space.
It makes some sense, given how deep the Pelicans are at the point. They already have Jrue Holiday, Tyreke Evans, Eric Gordon, Austin Rivers and second-round pick Russ Smith vying for minutes at the guard spots, so the offense-only Roberts was expendable.
At 28 years old, Roberts is coming off of a sophomore season in which he averaged 9.4 points and 3.3 assists but graded as below-average in terms of efficiency and struggled on the defensive end. He was originally undrafted out of Dayton and spent several seasons in Israel and Germany before signing with New Orleans in 2012.
