As free agency opened early Tuesday morning, the Boston Celtics made subtle waves by reaching out to restricted free agent point guard Isaiah Thomas.
The reason this is interesting, you may have clued in, is that the Celtics already have a point guard in Rajon Rondo and also drafted another in Marcus Smart, though the latter could be considered a combo-guard. They also have Avery Bradley, another combo-guard, as a restricted free agent.
That's a whole lot of guard love, but it may signal that one could be on the move. Specifically, Rondo, who has been thought to be quietly on the market, and has been tied to the Sacramento Kings, Thomas' current team, in the past.
The Celtics reached out to Isaiah Thomas tonight. Interesting, the Kings and Celtics had recently been in talks on Rajon Rondo deal.

What does all of this mean? Maybe nothing. Teams do their due diligence all the time, and it's good to have options. It could, however, point to the Celtics' openness to a potential sign-and-trade of Thomas in any Rondo deal, or at least that they'd consider Thomas as part of a return.
Don't expect anything quickly on this front, however, as Thomas is said to be waiting for the major free agent point guard chip to fall before moving ahead in earnest.
Hearing Isaiah Thomas' decision will come after Kyle Lowry's. SAC and Thomas have strong mutual respect. Market value is key: $6 to $8 mil.

The Detroit Pistons, Los Angeles Lakers, Miami Heat, Dallas Mavericks and more are all said to be interested. The Pistons, in particular, are rumored to have offered a three-year, $24 million contract, though the original source of that note is unclear.
