It appears the wait for Dirk Nowitzki to re-up with the Dallas Mavericks has come to an end.
The deal will not be made official until the July 10 moratorium on signings and trades ends.
Earlier reports indicated the 36-year-old was willing to wait for the Mavericks to upgrade their roster before agreeing to terms on a new deal, but Thursday's announcement comes despite any significant free agents committing to Dallas.
The decision to sign Nowitzki will likely give the Mavs a better idea of what they can do on the free agent market now that they know the dollar amount committed to their franchise player.
His new contract is a far cry from the four-year, $80-million deal he just completed, and allows Dallas to continue their pursuit of free agent Carmelo Anthony.
Stein also reports the Mavericks are also considering Houston Rockets free agent Chandler Parsons or Cleveland Cavaliers free agent Luol Deng if they fail to lure Anthony away from the New York Knicks.
Nowtizki averaged 21.7 points, a career-low 6.2 rebounds (excluding his strike-shortened rookie season) and 32.9 minutes per game in 80 games for the Mavericks last season.
Moments after the news broke, the big German tweeted out the acronym MFFL: Mavs Fan For Life.
