The Orlando Magic officially announced the signing of power forward Channing Frye on Monday.
Frye's deal, which you can read about in the post below, is thought to be a four-year contract worth $32 million.
The Magic have a clear need for floor spacing help, and bigs who can do just that have been shown to really open up an offense. With the Magic employing Victor Oladipo, Elfrid Payton and Nikola Vucevic, none of whom are real long-range threats, Frye represents a terrific complementary piece. The price is appreciable, but few players Frye's size can shoot it like he can.
Magic general manager Rob Hennigan highlighted some other areas Frye should contribute:
We’re extremely excited to welcome Channing (Frye) and his family to Orlando. Channing’s character, competiveness, veteran experience, and leadership ability are valuable additions to our developing team. His ability to stretch the floor and play sound team defense are also ways in which we envision Channing helping our team moving forward.
Meanwhile, Frye cited the team's bright future as a key factor in his decision to sign in Orlando. With Oladipo, Payton and Aaron Gordon in the fold, it's hard to blame him.
