The Los Angeles Lakers already know they've missed out on the top names in free agency, and so they've moved on to less flashy names. Their biggest addition may come behind the bench, where they still don't have a head coach hired.
Their logic for delaying the decision some was fair, with the team not wanting to hire a candidate who a star free agent may not have been amenable to. Now, however, it seems like they're probably in the clear, unless they're still gathering intel on how future free agents may feel about candidates.
In any case, they're still a week or two from making a hire, according to a report from ESPN Los Angeles.
While Byron Scott has long been considered a favorite - including in the eyes of superstar Kobe Bryant - the team is said to remain engaged in the interview process. Even Scott, who has reportedly interviewed three times, "would need another interview" to secure the job.
As many as five other coaches have been contacted about the job, with discussions ranging from a "casual conversation" to more formal interviews, though three of those coaches have since accepted jobs elsewhere. That means Scott, Mike Dunleavy and George Karl are the candidates who have been publicly acknowledged.
"It's still open," Scott said Friday.
