Michael Jordan on LeBron reverting to No. 23: 'I'm cool with it, I don't own a number'
All those who were hoping to see some tension between Michael Jordan and LeBron James will be disappointed by this one.
LeBron announced Sunday that he will revert to the No. 23 jersey he wore during the first seven seasons of his NBA career with the Cleveland Cavaliers, inevitably triggering yet another discussion over whether the number should be retired by the league.
It's worth pointing out that in November of 2009, when he announced his initial switch away from the No. 23, James voiced his support for retiring the number.
"I just think what Michael Jordan has done for the game has to be recognized some way soon," said James at the time. "There would be no LeBron James, no Kobe Bryant, no Dwyane Wade if there wasn't Michael Jordan first.
"He can't get the logo, and if he can't, something has to be done. I feel like no NBA player should 23. I'm starting a petition, and I've got to get everyone in the NBA to sign it. Now, if I'm not going to wear No. 23, then nobody else should be able to wear it."
While LeBron clearly had a change of heart, Jordan's comments are yet another instance of perceived beef between the two being squashed. During Game 3 of the Miami Heat's first-round series against the Charlotte Bobcats earlier this year, LeBron was criticized for staring down Jordan while throwing down a dunk, only for the legendary pair to shake hands after the final buzzer.
