Kyrie Irving 'Couldn't even sit down' Saturday after Thursday fall
It appears Kyrie Irving was in worse shape than he and USA Basketball let on over the weekend, after the Cleveland Cavaliers point guard took a nasty spill Thursday in a game against Ukraine.
After participating in practice Friday, Irving played 24 minutes on Saturday as the U.S. romped Mexico in a Round of 16 game. He looked fine, although a bit passive, on the court, and admitted Monday he was still in a good deal of pain during the game.
"I couldn't even sit down on the bench," Irving said, explaining why he spent stretches of time off the court standing on the sidelines rather than sitting.
According to Marc Stein of ESPN, there was no talk of Irving sitting out that game, and there appears to be no concern about his status for the team's quarterfinal game against Slovenia on Tuesday.
"I really wanted to be out there," Irving said.
Through six tournament games, Irving is averaging 8.8 points and 3.5 assists while shooting 51.2 percent from the floor, edging fellow point guard Derrick Rose in terms of offensive performance. He'll need to be at his best defensively on Tuesday, as Slovenia and the Dragic brothers own one of the tournament's top offenses.
