Report: Wizards reach out to Ray Allen again, haven't been told 'no'
With NBA training camp less than two weeks away, here's the Washington Wizards depth chart at shooting guard: Bradley Beal and Martell Webster.
Webster isn't expected to be available until December - at the earliest - after offseason back surgery, and Beal has dealt with stress fractures in his leg the past two years. Outside of that pair, it's unproven Summer League standout Glen Rice Jr. and a host of points or small forwards who could conceivably play out of position. In short, it's dire straits.
It should be no surprise, then, that the Wizards remain active on the free agent market at this late juncture. The market is mostly bare, but one veteran name stands out, and feels like a perfect fit: Ray Allen.
And according to CSN Washington, the Wizards have once again reached out to the 39-year-old, who is still deciding whether to play a 19th season or retire. While reaching out again doesn't necessarily mean much, Allen's agent Jim Tanner "hasn't told the Wizards that they wouldn't be an option."
Allen's decision-making dragging on is a minor issue for the Wizards, who have 14 guaranteed contracts on the roster and appear to be waiting on Allen before signing a 15th.
If Allen does land in Washington, instead of on any of the championship contenders that are said to be interested (see the storyline below), the obvious narrative that comes to mind his him mentoring Beal, with whom he shares some similarities:
Through 2 Seasons | Beal | Allen |
---|---|---|
Height | 6'3" | 6'5" |
Weight | 207lbs | 205lbs |
PPG | 15.7 | 16.5 |
RPG | 3.8 | 4.5 |
APG | 2.9 | 3.5 |
3FG% | 39.6% | 37.7% |
3FGA/FGA | 31.5% | 30.0% |
More than the mentor aspect, the Wizards really just need some depth at the two. Allen's a solid fit for several reasons, but it will take him passing up another possible title run to sign in Washington.
