Judge issues permanent injunction to prevent sports betting in New Jersey; state to appeal

A U.S. district judge ruled in favor of the NCAA, NFL, the NBA and two other major sports leagues Friday, issuing a permanent injunction to prevent sports betting in New Jersey, according to ESPN's David Purdum.

Judge Michael Shipp said that the 2014 Sports Wagering Law violates the Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act of 1992.

Sen. Raymond Lesniak told ESPN that New Jersey will file an appeal over the ruling within days.

"Obviously we're disappointed, but not terribly surprised," said Dennis Drazin, adviser to Darby Development LLC which operates Monmouth Park Racetrack. "After analyzing the rationale expressed by the Court in granting a temporary restraining order last month, today's action was rather expected. We will once again return to the Third Circuit Court of Appeals and ask that they order strict adherence to their 2013 decision, which established the roadmap for New Jersey to begin offering sports wagering.

"For now, it's status quo. Nevertheless, we remain confident that the Third Circuit will render a favorable result for Monmouth Park."
