Nick Young on game-winner: Kobe's trash talk inspired him, 'I don't miss'
With great swag comes great quotability.
There was only one thing certain when Nick Young launched a 3-point attempt with seven seconds to go in overtime on Friday night: there would be great quotes following the game.
To hear Young tell it, there was another certainty: the shot was going in.
"Once it left my hand, I kind of knew it was cash," Young said. "I'm like, 'I don't miss.' That's my new name - 'I.D.M.' Call me 'I.D.M.' You feel me?"
The shot did go in, giving the Los Angeles Lakers a 112-110 lead over the San Antonio Spurs. The Lakers would maintain their lead, winning the match. It was quite the feather in Young's cap at the end of an unbelievable night that saw him score 29 points on just 14 field goal attempts, stealing some of the spotlight from teammate Kobe Bryant's pursuit of Michael Jordan.
With Bryant needing 31 points to pass Jordan - he'd ultimately score 22, leaving the milestone for Sunday - Young was a little surprised he got so many opportunities.
"I'm glad I had a chance to hit the game winner with somebody like Kobe on the floor," Young said. "No offense to Kobe, but I didn't think I was going to get the ball that much. I thought he was going to break that record, at least get 40 or 50 points."
As for Bryant, he probably wasn't thrilled to defer the game's final shot, but expressed plenty of confidence in his boisterous running mate. So long as he's well-guarded, anyway.
"I have more confidence in his shots when guys are draped all over him," Bryant said.
Bryant came under some fire this week for his treatment of teammates after video surfaced of him calling the other Lakers, among other things, Charmin-soft. Young seemed to take the criticism better than most, trash-talking back at Bryant in practice and encouraging the team's younger players to do the same.
"It worked pretty well," Bryant said of his motivational tactics pushing Young and, to a lesser extent, Jeremy Lin to solid outings.
Never one to let the opportunity for a joke skate by, Young didn't take issue with Bryant's comments so much as the particular brand of toilet paper he was compared to.
"When I'm out there, I don't play like Charmin," Young said. "I like Scott Tissue. It's a little rougher."
He also pointed to Bryant's trash-talk in practice as a motivating factor in his game-winner.
There are some who take issue with Young's ways. He's always joking, he's nicknamed himself Swaggy P - now I.D.M. - and the attention he's given isn't commensurate with his overall production. Yet he's still unquestionably one of the league's best quotes and most fun players. He's averaging 15.7 points with career-best efficiency metrics right now.
If he don't miss, you can't hate.
