Report: Pistons showing interest in Pablo Prigioni
Don't worry, Detroit Pistons fans: Brandon Jennings may very well be out for the season with a torn Achilles tendon, but help is on the way.
The Pistons have shown exploratory interest in veteran New York Knicks point guard Pablo Prigioni, according to Marc Stein of ESPN. So, yeah, no worries, fellas, the team won't miss a step with Jennings out.
The timing of Jennings' injury is unfortunate for both team and player, as he was playing perhaps the best basketball of his life. He was averaging 15.4 points and 6.6 assists, numbers that had jumped to 19.8 and seven, respectively, since Josh Smith was waived, a move that coincided with a huge turnaround for Detroit.
Detroit needs to add a piece behind D.J. Augustin and Spencer Dinwiddie if Jennings is indeed done for the season, but it's going to be extremely difficult to fill Jennings' shoes. Dinwiddie has only appeared in nine games and played a total of 96 minutes, so Stan Van Gundy may prefer to add a veteran due to his discomfort with the rookie.
Prigioni is certainly a veteran at age 37, but he probably won't move the needle much. In three seasons with the Knicks, he's averaged 3.9 points and 3.1 assists in 17.9 minutes with slightly below-average efficiency. Van Gundy may find his 41.6 percent career mark from long range an attractive feature, and he plays relatively mistake-free ball.
At 17-27, the Pistons are just a game-and-a-half out of a playoff spot in the Eastern Conference and may be able to grab a spot even without Jennings, but that path gets far more difficult if Jennings turns into Augustin and Prigioni.
