Carmelo Anthony on surgery: 'I haven't made a decision yet'
It's been a long four months for Carmelo Anthony, and it may be time for a rest.
As the New York Knicks struggle at the bottom of the standings in a lost season and Anthony has languished through a persistently sore left knee, the tacit assumption has been that the superstar's season would end shortly after the All-Star Break.
The organization has been forthright that playing in the game, which was held in Anthony's hometown at Madison Square Garden, was important to him, even if the player himself called the idea somewhat absurd. Still, with Anthony playing without his usual power and bounce, he ultimately admitted he will likely shut his season down some time after the All-Star Break.
Well, Anthony reached his goal of appearing in the showcase, playing a somewhat unreasonable - and unproductive - 30 minutes on Sunday and getting quite the ovation for his trouble. Now comes the major question: Is Anthony's season over with that event checked off his career bucket list?
"I haven't made a decision yet," Anthony said after the All-Star Game. "I haven't even thought about it. I want to get through tonight and have a clear mind."
Anthony is expected to need eight weeks to recover if he opts to undergo surgery to repair the tendon issue in the knee, meaning his season will end whenever he makes the decision.
It should be a fairly easy one. The Knicks are battling for lottery ping-pong balls, not victories, and getting the surgery out of the way now would conceivably allow Anthony to enter 2015-16 at full health. From a franchise perspective, losing Anthony may disappoint fans but considering the team is 0-13 when he's sat to rest the knee this year, it would go a long way toward securing a top pick in the draft.
