With a tidy cap sheet, all of their own future first-round picks and the opportunity to make noise in the Western Conference, it sounds as if the Portland Trail Blazers could be one of the trade deadline's biggest movers.
The Blazers are looking for additional depth on the wing behind Wesley Matthews and the struggling and banged-up Nicolas Batum, and they appear ready to come correct with youthful assets to make a deal happen. Portland has put Thomas Robinson, Will Barton and a future first-round pick all available in talks for a wing player, according to Adrian Wojnarowski of Yahoo Sports.
Wilson Chandler of the Denver Nuggets is said to be Portland's primary target, with Portland preferring him to teammate Arron Afflalo because he can't opt out of his deal this summer like Afflalo can. The players are comparable in overall value and salary, with Afflalo being a better shooter but Chandler a better rebounder and a bigger, more versatile defender, though not necessarily a better one.
If the Blazers are surrendering assets for help, they appear to prefer multi-season help, even if Chandler's $7.2-million salary for next year would eat into their substantial potential cap space. That's not terribly surprising since most of that cap space will likely go to re-signing their own free agents, in which case securing an additional roster player now is a better strategy than trying to land one in free agency without the non-taxpayer mid-level exception available.
Moving on from Robinson is logical, given he's been passed by Meyers Leonard in the rotation and sees few minutes as LaMarcus Aldridge's backup. He's also an impending free agent, though he could also represent an intriguing flier for the rest of the season given he was the No. 5 pick in 2012 and has never really received serious playing time.
Barton, meanwhile, is a restricted free agent this summer and while he's shown flashes in limited exposure, it's now his third season and the Blazers need immediate help.
Dealing a first may be palatable for a better chance at competing in the playoffs, but the Blazers also eschewed picking last year and don't have a second-round pick until 2019.
