'Devastated' Parsons needs surgery, unsure he will be ready for training camp
Things went brutally sideways in a hurry for the Dallas Mavericks this spring.
On Thursday, forward Chandler Parsons – who was ruled out for the rest of the playoffs on Wednesday – told reporters that he will require surgery for the right knee injury that derailed his season. While he is not yet positive what sort of procedure he will undergo, he conceded that he might not be ready for training camp next fall.
"It's just so frustrating right now," Parsons said, adding that there is no structural damage to the knee. The former Houston Rocket said that had the Mavs not been playing his old team in the first round, he would have sat out Game 1 as well.
Parsons started Game 1 after missing the final six regular-season games, but re-aggravated the injury during that contest.
"I was obviously looking forward to this series against Houston and it's all taken away from me," Parsons said Thursday. "It's devastating."
Combined with Rajon Rondo's spectacular break with coach Rick Carlisle, devastating is a good word to describe the last week for the Mavericks. Dallas comes home for Game 3 Friday in an 0-2 hole.
Speaking with media Thursday, center Tyson Chandler said he was a "little surprised" by the Mavericks ruling Rondo out indefinitely with a back injury, a development which led Carlisle to admit he thinks Rondo has played his last game as a Maverick.
"It is what it is," Chandler said.
While Rondo's play has hurt the Mavericks in two playoff games, the team will rely on J.J. Barea and Raymond Felton at the point going forward. Devin Harris is expected to also play in Game 3. Meanwhile, Richard Jefferson has spelled Parsons at small forward.
