WNBA's Brittney Griner files for annulment from Glory Johnson
After just 28 days of marriage, Brittney Griner has filed paperwork seeking an annulment from Glory Johnson.
The pair were married on May 9 in Phoenix, just weeks after Griner reached a plea deal in a domestic assault case stemming from an April 22 arrest. Griner agreed to plead guilty to disorderly conduct and complete 26 weeks of domestic violence counseling, upon the completion of which the charges against her would be dropped. Charges related to the arrest are still pending against Johnson.
Griner, a center for the Phoenix Mercury of the WNBA, received a seven-game suspension as a result of the incident, as did Johnson, a forward for the Tulsa Shock.
Johnson had posted on Instagram in support of Griner following their domestic incident, confirming that the wedding would still take place as planned. More recently, Johnson had been announced as out for the season due to a pregnancy.
"It has always been a dream of mine to start a family with someone I love," Johnson posted on Instagram on Thursday.
Griner released the following statement to ESPNW:
Last Wednesday, Glory and I agreed to either legally separate, get divorced, or annul our marriage. I can confirm that today I filed for an annulment. In the week prior to the wedding, I attempted to postpone the wedding several times until I completed counseling, but I still went through with it. I now realize that was a mistake.
While Griner's statement indicates a mutual agreement to part ways, Johnson told TMZ on Friday that she was "blindsided" by the news. That's further corroborated by an Instagram post from early Friday afternoon in which Johnson expressed excitement to be "reunited with my Wife @brittneygriner."
Griner's paperwork sites "void based on fraud" as the reason for the annulment, alleging she was pressured into marriage under duress.
