Mike Miller is expected to garner interest from several teams once he gets bought out, as the Portland Trail Blazers are likely to do.
The 35-year-old former NBA Rookie of the Year and career 40.7 percent 3-point shooter was dealt by the Cleveland Cavaliers to the Blazers on Sunday, along with the expiring contract of Brandon Haywood and two future second-round draft picks. The move created two trade exceptions for Cleveland of $10.5 million and $2.85 million.
The Memphis Grizzlies, Oklahoma City Thunder, and Dallas Mavericks may throw their names in the hat to acquire Miller once/if he becomes an unrestricted free agent, according to ESPN's Marc Stein.
Portland will presumably release the long-range specialist as they move forward with a young, up-and-coming roster in the wake of four starters finding new homes (including Arron Afflalo, who replaced Wesley Matthews following his Achilles injury).
Miller may have to wait to sign until the start of the 2015-16 season, though, with roster spots being hard to come by at this time of year, as Stein points out.
In 52 appearances last season, Miller averaged a career-low 2.1 points in 13.5 minutes on 32.5 percent shooting from the field.
The Thunder and Grizzlies may not be realistic options for the 15th-year pro, as both teams are nearing the maximum for guaranteed contracts.
It's unlikely Miller will choose a rebuilding project or a franchise without championship aspirations. If a contender can find room to stash him at the end of their bench, they'll be giving themselves an emergency wing with a proven track record of being able to get hot from behind the arc.
