Sixers officially sign Kendall Marshall to reported 4-year deal
The Philadelphia 76ers finally made a move to bolster their lack of depth at point guard.
The team announced the signing of Kendall Marshall on Wednesday. Details of Marshall's contract were not released, but Eric Pincus of Basketball Insiders reports that he'll earn $2.1 million in the first season of a four-year contract. In standard 76ers fashion, the deal is front-loaded and the final three years aren't guaranteed, but the deal could pay Marshall up to $8 million if the team keeps him around past each of his annual guarantee dates.
The 76ers' interest in Marshall was first reported last week, after he had been spotted at the team facility for several days.
The addition of Marshall gives the 76ers a bit more security at point guard, previously a painfully thin position. Philadelphia ostensibly has five lead guards, but that's a bit misleading - Isaiah Canaan is really an undersized shooting guard, Scottie WIlbekin will be in camp with a non-guaranteed deal, Pierre Jackson is on the comeback trail from a torn Achilles, and Tony Wroten is working his way back from a torn ACL.
Of the group, Marshall carries the most pedigree, as the 24-year-old was selected 13th overall in 2012 before bouncing around with the Phoenix Suns, Los Angeles Lakers, and Milwaukee Bucks over three somewhat unspectacular seasons. Marshall, too, is working his way back from a torn ACL that ended his 2014-15 campaign.
Despite failing to latch on in his last three stops, Marshall has shown to be a steady ball-handler and an accurate 3-point shooter. He boasts career averages of 9.5 assists per 36 minutes and a 37.7 percent clip from deep.
