Free agent Brendan Haywood has no plans to retire
There's always a market for big men.
Despite evidence that may suggest the contrary, Brendan Haywood seems to believe the tepid market for his services will pick up, telling SiriusXM NBA Radio on Wednesday he isn't planning to retire.
Haywood, who played a total of 119 minutes over the past two seasons, is perhaps best known in recent years for his $10.5-million, non-guaranteed salary for 2015-16. The Cleveland Cavaliers kept the 35-year-old on their roster all of last season in hopes he'd become a valuable trade chip this summer.
That didn't really happen, though the Cavs were able to flip Haywood and Mike Miller to the Portland Trail Blazers, creating two sizable trade exceptions in the process. Uninterested in paying Haywood a large sum they had no obligation to pay, the Blazers promptly waived the 7-footer, making him an unrestricted free agent.
Since then, Haywood's name hasn't been whispered in the rumor mill. But size never really goes out of vogue, so Haywood's insistence that he's not done playing is understandable, even though he hasn't played a relevant minute in years.
A former first-round pick, Haywood averaged 6.8 points, six rebounds, and 1.4 blocks in 816 career games across four teams, winning a championship with the Dallas Mavericks in 2011.
