Derrick Rose suffers orbital fracture after elbow to face, will undergo surgery
Just one team practice into the 2015-16 season, and Derrick Rose's injury troubles have already returned.
Rose took an elbow to the face during the first day of Chicago Bulls training camp Tuesday, suffering a left orbital fracture. He'll undergo surgery Wednesday, after which a timetable for his return will be set.
After an up-and-down 2014-15 campaign - which came on the heels of his effectively missing two full years to knee injuries, and included a second meniscus tear in as many years - this is an inauspicious start to Rose's season, to say the least.
By all accounts, he has looked good throughout the summer. His trainer, as well as workout partner Russell Westbrook, both insisted that a summer of tireless work had the former MVP looking like "the old Derrick Rose." Bulls coach Fred Hoiberg said Rose "looked great when he was out there" in practice before taking the elbow.
This setback shouldn't derail his season by any means, but it will cost a good portion, if not the entirety, of training camp. Players who suffered similar injuries last season, like Mike Conley and Victor Oladipo, missed around three weeks on average.
Rose will also have to get acclimated to playing with a face mask when he returns, and the injury could make him all the more tentative about absorbing contact - a hesitation that impacted his production even last season, when he shot more 3-pointers than free throws.
Between the regular season and playoffs, Rose has missed 234 games in the past four years.
