Oakland transfer Townsend commits to Arizona
Oakland transfer Trey Townsend is committing to Arizona, he told ESPN's Jonathan Givony.
"Arizona checked all the boxes I was looking for during this process," said Townsend. "I look forward to getting to Tucson and playing for coach Tommy Lloyd, who has a proven track record of producing NBA players similar to me."
Townsend visited Michigan and Ohio State before joining the Wildcats, and he also considered Michigan State as a possible landing spot.
The Horizon League Player of the Year helped No. 14 seed Oakland upset No. 3 Kentucky, recording 17 points, 12 rebounds, and four assists in the win. In the Round of 32, he dropped 30 points and 13 rebounds in a loss to NC State, a team which made the Final Four.
The Golden Grizzlies forward averaged 17.3 points, 8.1 rebounds, and 2.9 assists per game this past season.
Townsend will replace forward Keshad Johnson after the latter used all of his college eligibility. Arizona lost center Oumar Ballo to Indiana, while guard Kylan Boswell transferred to Illinois.
The Wildcats were eliminated by No. 7 Clemson in the Sweet 16.
