Duke's Coach K not a fan of 'one-and-done' philosophy
Ever since the NCAA put a stop to players making the jump from high-school to the NBA without attending college for a year the basketball world has seen it's fair share of "one-and-done" players.
From the likes of Derrick Rose, John Wall and Kevin Durant to now Andrew Wiggins, Jabari Parker and Julius Randle, the one-and-done philosophy is something that will continue to live on. If it were up to Duke head coach Mike Krzyzewski the days of the one-and-done player would be over.
“Nationally, I’m a little bit worried that that is always becoming a thing,” Krzyzewski told a group of reporters Tuesday, according to USAToday.com.
"I think part of it is that people who show our games show NBA, too. So, the constant thought is cross-promoting. ... I love ESPN, and I think they should do whatever they want to do. But what I'm saying is, in some ways, we as a college basketball community should not completely buy into that."
Even with his own highly-touted freshman in Jabari Parker and the likes of Jahlil Okafor and Tyus Jones joining the team next season the head Blue Devil in charge believes seasoned players such as OSU's Marcus Smart and Creighton's Doug McDermott should receive more attention.
“These kids [the freshmen] are all great, don’t get me wrong,” Krzyzewski told Zagsblog.com. “But there are other great kids. Two kids who played in the summer for me in a five-day mini camp in Vegas with 28 other NBA players were McDermott and Smart. Well, they’re two of the best players in the country. They may be the two best.”
The rules are set in place and there's nothing hinting towards the NCAA looking to change them, but Krzyzewski believes that the NCAA needs to begin promoting itself now more than ever.
"In college basketball, you should not want to tell one story," Krzyzewksi said according to USAToday.com.
"If the one story you're telling is a lead-in to not even your sport, then somehow our sport needs to control that more. That's my take on it. That's why I think there should be a commissioner for basketball. I think we should work together. I'm not knocking anyone. You want ratings. We have to be careful. We have to sell our product."
