Report: Robert Upshaw could head to D-League after Washington dismissal
Not willing to let his college resume to date and the draft combine determine his stock for the 2015 NBA Draft, Robert Upshaw could be on his way to the D-League.
Upsahw was dismissed from Washington on Monday for an undisclosed violation of team rules. This isn't Upshaw's first bout of trouble at the collegiate level, as he was dismissed from Fresno State following his 2012-13 freshman season.
Despite the disciplinary issues, the 7-foot center is considered a potential first-round pick. DraftExpress has him ranked as their No. 20 prospect and ESPN has him at No. 37. Given his size - he has a 7-foot-5 wingspan - and defensive chops, it's easy to see teams being intrigued and hoping they can help him sort out any off-court issues, which include failed drug tests.
He's raw offensively but flashed much better skills as a finisher in 19 games with Washington, averaging 10.9 points on 59.3 percent shooting. He was also averaging a ridiculous 4.4 blocks and grabbing 8.3 rebounds, skills that should translate well to the D-League.
The jump to the D-League wouldn't be unprecedented, as P.J. Hairston made a similar move after being suspended by UNC a year ago, ultimately getting drafted 26th overall.
Upshaw cannot jump to the D-League until the NCAA or Washington officially declare him ineligible, but once they do, Upshaw is seriously considering making the move, according to Adrian Wojnarowski of Yahoo Sports. Grand Rapids, the D-League affiliate of the Detroit Pistons, have the top waiver priority should Upshaw become available.
