Brian Kelly says school will decide discipline for suspended players
Four of the five Notre Dame players head coach Brian Kelly disciplined following recent arrests have returned to practice, but their return to game action will be decided by the university.
"As I said in my statement, there could be further actions through the university, and that will have to take its course," Kelly told ESPN's Matt Fortuna. "I think the university is certainly looking at all of the cases and will be certainly expediting or moving quickly through the process, but those matters are out of my hands. I've dealt with it internally, they've been handled within the program, and the rest will be about what the university does."
Te'Von Coney, Kevin Stepherson, Ashton White, and Dexter Williams were arrested last weekend on misdemeanor marijuana charges, with Stepherson and Williams also slapped with a charge for possession of a handgun without a license. Those four were immediately suspended, with a fifth player, Max Redfield, dismissed from the program.
The Fighting Irish open the 2016 campaign at Texas on Sept. 4, and whether the team will have the services of the four players will likely be determined by that date.
