Ex-Alabama OL questions school's treatment of injured players
Dolphins offensive lineman Anthony Steen won three national champions with Alabama, starting three years on the offensive line.
However, Steen went undrafted and was signed as a free agent by the Arizona Cardinals. He is now on the Miami Dolphins' practice squad.
He blames going undrafted in part on a shoulder injury he didn't have surgery on until after his college career, much to his chagrin.
“Football, a lot of it is mentally,” Steen said to Joe Shaad of the Palm Beach Post. “If you can work through pain, you can go. But at ‘Bama, that was the problem. A lot of things you went through and you shouldn’t have. You should have stayed off of it. That’s why a lot of guys from ‘Bama are hurt.”
In May, Alabama head coach Nick Saban was asked about former players - especially running back Derrick Henry and his 395 carries during the 2015 season - and if they're deemed worn down heading into the NFL.
"When you talk to NFL teams, none of them ever say that to me," Saban said. "I don't know where that came from. Eddie Lacy comes out and is rookie of the year as a running back. Where's the wear and tear? We had 45 guys on NFL rosters last year, which is more than any other college team, so where's the wear and tear? I don't see it."
