Kroger signs deal with Kentucky for naming rights on stadium

The Kentucky football venue known as Commonwealth Stadium is no more, as the university announced on Monday that their home turf will now be known as Kroger Field.

The deal between the school and the massive Grocery corporation is for 12 years at a fee of $1.85 million annually.

"Three years ago, we had this day in mind when we reached our new multimedia rights agreement with JMI Sports," athletic director Mitch Barnhart said in a statement. "We are proud to have a partner in Kroger that shares our commitment to making this state and university the best they can be. This partnership goes well beyond the naming of Kroger Field and we are excited to see the good it will do for years to come."

The deal will also make Kroger the Official Fuel Partner, the Official Grocery Partner of Move-In at Kentucky, as well as the Official Nutrition and Pharmacy Partner of the athletic department.

The name of the actual playing field will now be C.M. Newton Grounds at Kroger Field, in honor of former athletic director C.M. Newton.
