Pitt's Tyler Boyd suspended for season opener following DUI charge
Pittsburgh wide receiver Tyler Boyd will miss the Panthers' season opener against Youngstown State. Head coach Pat Narduzzi announced Monday that Boyd will be suspended for the Sept. 5 game due to a DUI charge filed against him in early June.
Boyd was formally charged with DUI and several other violations stemming from a traffic stop. He will enter a court program that allows first-time offenders to have their charges withdrawn and potentially expunged.
Sophomore defensive lineman Rori Blair was also suspended for the Panthers' season opener, following his own legal situation involving a motor vehicle.
"In addition to their game suspensions, Tyler and Rori have been, and will continue to be, subject to internal discipline and accountability," Narduzzi said in a statement. "The situations were very disappointing and both young men have expressed their regret. Our expectation is that each of them, as well as our entire team, will learn from their mistakes and be better for it moving forward."
Set to enter his junior season, Boyd is coming off a 2014 campaign in which he hauled in 78 passes for 1,261 yards and eight touchdowns. He is considered one of the top NFL prospects in all of college football, and projects as a top-10 selection in the 2016 draft.
Pitt is scheduled to open training camp on Aug. 10.
