Shaw on whether he directed homophobic slur at ref: 'I don't know what I said'
Overshadowing the Blues' big win over the Blackhawks on Tuesday night, which gives St. Louis a 3-1 first-round series lead, was a late third-period incident involving Chicago forward Andrew Shaw.
Shaw, after taking an interference penalty that he wasn't happy about, flipped a double-bird salute at the official on his way to the penalty box. Once inside the penalty box, he appeared to direct a homophobic slur towards the referee who made the call.
There's video of Shaw in the penalty box, and if you read his lips, you can tell that he's using very explicit language:
Shaw was asked about what he said after the game.
"Emotions were high," he said, according to the Chicago Sun-Times' Mark Lazerus. "I don't know what I said. I wasn't happy with the call."
According to USA Today Sports' Krisen Shilton, Shaw said "he doesn't remember what was said" when he was in the box.
The unfortunate events were the talk of the online hockey world after what was another hard-fought, one-goal game between two teams that do not like each other.
Shaw actually played an impressive hockey game, scoring once and adding two assists, but no one was talking about what he did on the ice after his team lost. It's highly possible the NHL looks into Shaw's actions, and disciplines the 24-year-old.
