Miami Heat

Biggest need: 3-point shooting

The Heat could be in for significant changes this summer. Chris Bosh's health and playing future have been called the team's "X-factor" by president Pat Riley. The unrestricted free agency of Dwyane Wade and Hassan Whiteside also stand out, as do decisions regarding veteran wings Luol Deng and Joe Johnson.

The weakness with this year's Heat was from beyond the arc. Miami ranked 27th in the NBA in 3-point percentage, but from the time Johnson joined them in late February until the end of the season, they ranked sixth. Retaining "Iso Joe" - who'll be 35 next season - probably hinges on a few other Heat chips falling into place. The uncertainty with the roster is worth noting because Miami doesn't have a first- or second-round draft pick this year.

Atlanta Hawks

Biggest need: Re-signing their free agents

Similar to Miami, it's difficult to quantify what exactly the Hawks need to add because there are big question marks about the existing roster. Al Horford will be one of this summer's big-fish free agents, while Kent Bazemore hits the unrestricted market, too. Kyle Korver's no longer the same player he was in his record-setting campaign of 2014-15. Rumors have swirled for over a year about the Hawks choosing one of Jeff Teague or Dennis Schroder at the point, and trading the other.

On the floor, the Hawks have had about as good a two-season run as a team can have in the NBA without reaching the Finals. Their biggest obstacle has been meeting the Cleveland Cavaliers in the playoffs. All things considered, it feels like Atlanta could have a much different squad next season.

Charlotte Hornets

Biggest need: Interior scoring/toughness

The Hornets' No. 1 goal this summer should actually be to re-sign Nicolas Batum, who was instrumental in what was the best campaign by a Charlotte basketball team since 1999-2000. Beyond that, the Hornets will have to make decisions on two other unrestricted free agents up front: Al Jefferson and Marvin Williams. The 31-year-old Jefferson played in a career-low 47 games this season due to both a knee injury and drug suspension. Williams started 81 games for Charlotte at power forward.

The Hornets were out-muscled in their first-round playoff exit at the hands of the Heat, and should be looking into an interior upgrade. It's believed that Charlotte may be interested in Whiteside, or perhaps Dwight Howard, who has history with coach Steve Clifford.

Washington Wizards

Biggest need: Rebounding

The Wizards ranked 26th in the league in total rebounds and 25th in rebounding percentage in 2015-16. Fourteen-year veteran reserve big man Nene is an unrestricted free agent and isn't expected to return.

Washington brought in Markieff Morris at the four last season on a contract that comes out as a bargain over the next three years. The team will pursue Washington native Kevin Durant aggressively. Regardless of how that transpires, however, the Wizards need somebody up front who can grab a board, likely in the form of a rotational backup to both Morris and center Marcin Gortat.

Unfortunately, the Wizards don't possess either a first- or second-round draft pick this June, so they'll need to be active on the trade or free-agent market - not just in the Durant sweepstakes.

Orlando Magic

Biggest need: Experienced frontcourt player

The Orlando Magic have a lot of young talent, but not much in the way of veteran know-how. Brandon Jennings is an unrestricted free agent and will get offers elsewhere. The contract of the other experienced player the Magic acquired from the Detroit Pistons last season, Ersan Ilyasova, isn't guaranteed.

Frank Vogel inherits a pretty good scenario with players like Nikola Vucevic, Victor Oladipo, Elfrid Payton, Aaron Gordon, and restricted free agent Evan Fournier. Yet the defensive-minded head coach probably wouldn't mind adding a forward with big-game experience. Orlando-area native Chandler Parsons' name has been mentioned, but he'd need to opt out of his Dallas Mavericks contract, and has a history of knee problems.
