Lap 40 - 100 miles down, Hinchcliffe back to sixth after issue during earlier pit stop.

Lap 32 - Hunter-Reay retakes lead as the rest of the field makes their first pit stops of the day. Sage Karam (2 laps) among leaders during the pit cycle.

Lap 28 - Hinchcliffe, Hunter-Reay are the first two to make pit stops on the day. Newgarden takes first Indy 500 lead of his career before pitting at lap 30.

Lap 25 - Josef Newgarden breaks into the top two, passing Hinchcliffe.

Lap 20 - 50 miles into the race, both Hunter-Reay and Hinchcliffe have each led 10 laps. Townsend Bell, Josef Newgarden and Mikhail Aleshin round out the top five.

Lap 9 - Hinchcliffe passes Hunter-Reay for lead. Both drivers have exchanged the lead multiple times early on.

Lap 1 - Alex Tagliani bumps Gabby Chaves and grazes the wall, but remains in the race.

Lap 1 - The race is officially underway! Hunter-Reay takes the early lead from Hinchcliffe, while 1996 champion Buddy Lazier misses the start due to electrical problems.

Pre-race

The historic pre-race traditions continue before the cars take the track including performances of God Bless America and the Star-Spangled Banner, and a military flyover with four F-18E's crossing the track at over 300 mph.

The hundreds of thousands of fans at Indianapolis Motor Speedway are taking their seats.
