Rusev captures United States Championship at Extreme Rules
For the second time in his career, "The Bulgarian Brute" Rusev is once again in possession of the WWE United States Championship.
It was a true David versus Goliath title bout at Sunday's Extreme Rules, with Rusev weighing over 100 pounds more than champion Kalisto, who entered the bout having held the gold since the Royal Rumble on Jan. 24.
After tossing the Lucha Dragon off the top rope and onto the apron, the official and a nearby physician appeared close to calling the match due to injury.
Rusev wasn't going to allow that to happen, though, dragging Kalisto to the center of the ring, kicking him in the back, and locking in his signature Accolade submission hold to submit his opponent.
Kalisto got in his fair share of offense, including a beautiful moonsault off the top rope to the outside. However, his clear size and strength disadvantage proved too much to overcome in the end.
Rusev's first title reign began Nov. 3 after defeating Sheamus in a special match which aired exclusively on the WWE Network following "Monday Night Raw." He eventually lost the championship months later at WrestleMania 31 to John Cena.
