Wednesday's Second Baseman Value Rankings
Here are theScore's second baseman value rankings for Wednesday, May 25 (all stats exclude Tuesday's games):
Value Rankings

Top Options
NAME | OPPONENT | VALUE |
---|---|---|
Jose Altuve (HOU) | vs. BAL | 9 |
Ben Zobrist (CHC) | at STL | 8 |
Robinson Cano (SEA) | vs. OAK | 8 |
Even though Altuve has failed to register a hit in his last two outings, there's not much he can't do in fantasy. He has gone yard nine times to start the season, with 27 RBIs. His .328 average has been maintained all season long and he has been moved from leadoff to second in the batting order.
Zobrist and Cano are close seconds to Altuve, but have tougher matchups. Zobrist plays in one of the most pitcher-friendly ballparks, while Cano's power surge has come to an abrupt halt, failing to post a homer or extra base hit in four straight. Either way - it's tough to ignore their consistent fantasy production.
Mid-Tier Targets
NAME | OPPONENT | VALUE |
---|---|---|
Jean Segura (ARI) | at PIT | 7 |
Dustin Pedroia (BOS) | vs. COL | 7 |
Steve Pearce (BAL) | at HOU | 7 |
Daniel Murphy (WAS) | vs. NYM | 7 |
Jason Kipnis (CLE) | at CWS | 7 |
Brian Dozier (MIN) | vs. KC | 7 |
Derek Dietrich (MIA) | at TB | 7 |
Brett Lawrie (CWS) | vs. CLE | 7 |
Second base is one of the deepest positions in all of baseball, so it's easy to target a mid-tier player and watch them exceed their expected return. Segura falls into this category. Although he isn't swinging a hot bat, he has been a terrific table setter for the Diamondbacks, scoring five runs in the last four games and owns an inspiring .348 OBP.
Murphy has carried his unbelievable playoff performance over to the Nationals and is hitting .389 on the season, the best average in all of baseball. He also has 16 extra base hits and six homers. His opponent is Mets southpaw Steven Matz, who is 6-1 while holding batters to a daunting .231 average.
NAME | OPPONENT | VALUE |
---|---|---|
Ian Kinsler (DET) | vs. PHI | 6 |
Brandon Phillips (CIN) | at LAD | 6 |
Scooter Gennett (MIL) | at ATL | 6 |
Josh Harrison (PIT) | vs. ARI | 6 |
Jonathan Schoop (BAL) | at HOU | 6 |
Joe Panik (SF) | vs. SD | 6 |
DJ LeMahieu (COL) | at BOS | 6 |
The Tigers' table setter has been exceptional to start the season, crushing 10 bombs while maintaining an average over .306. The big question mark around him coming into Wednesday is his health, as he missed Tuesday's game with the flu, which will likely lead to a low-ownership percentage. Nevertheless, he has scored 11 runs in his last 10 games.
Schoop has two multi-hit games in his last three and is hitting .400 over that span. He has also scored three runs, and hit one tater that propelled him to eight on the year. A matchup against the struggling Collin McHugh makes Schoop an intriguing option at the keystone.
NAME | OPPONENT | VALUE |
---|---|---|
Rougned Odor (TEX) | vs. LAA | 5 |
Starlin Castro (NYY) | vs. TOR | 5 |
Josh Rutledge (BOS) | vs. COL | 5 |
Aaron Hill (MIL) | at ATL | 5 |
Chase Utley (LAD) | vs. CIN | 5 |
Neil Walker (NYM) | at WAS | 5 |
Johnny Giavotella (LAA) | at TEX | 5 |
With the league passing down a decision on Odor's suspension appeal on Wednesday, he may not play - which will result in a low-ownership percentage. He's been relatively quiet since the altercation with Bautista, hitting well below The Mendoza Line (.160) and only one double.
Hill had a seven game hit-streak in mid-May where he was slashing an impressive .280/.379/.400 with three extra base hits but still owns a .250 average. With better options, he's a buy-low contrarian option at best.
Nothing to See Here
NAME | OPPONENT | VALUE |
---|---|---|
Darwin Barney (TOR) | at NYY | 4 |
Ryan Goins (TOR) | at NYY | 4 |
Howie Kendrick (LAD) | vs. CIN | 4 |
Cesar Hernandez (PHI) | at DET | 3 |
Kolten Wong (STL) | vs. CHC | 3 |
Omar Infante (KC) | at MIN | 3 |
With the return of Devon Travis on the horizon, Barney and Goins will not be in a timeshare at the Blue Jays keystone. They should be faded anyway, as neither have much value to offer.
