What appeared to be just a dislocated shoulder has turned out considerably worse for New York Yankees utility man Dustin Ackley, as manager Joe Girardi confirmed Monday that the 28-year-old has been diagnosed with a torn right labrum.

Ackley was placed on the 15-day disabled list less than 24 hours after hurting his shoulder in Sunday's series finale in Tampa Bay. He may require surgery, added Girardi.

"It felt like it kind of got jammed a little bit when I went back in," Ackley told MLB.com's Bryan Hoch after injuring his shoulder while diving back into first base on a pickoff attempt Sunday. "I couldn't really tell exactly what happened. I've never had any shoulder things in the past before, so it's hard for me to pinpoint what it was."

Acquired from the Seattle Mariners ahead of last year's trade deadline, Ackley's stumbled through a miserable start to his first full campaign with New York. He hit just .148/.243/.148 in 28 games this season while spending time at first base, second base, right field, and designated hitter.

Ackley, the second overall pick in the 2009 draft, isn't the only Yankees player beset by a torn labrum in the past few months. Greg Bird, who smashed 11 homers with an .871 OPS as a rookie last year, underwent season-ending surgery after being diagnosed with a torn right labrum two weeks before the start of spring training.
