Tuesday's Catcher Value Rankings
Here are theScore's catcher value rankings for Tuesday, May 31 (all stats exclude Monday's games):
Value Rankings
C | 1B/DH | 2B | SS | 3B | OF | SP
Top Options
Name | Opponent | Value |
---|---|---|
Matt Wieters (BAL) | vs. BOS | 9 |
Cameron Rupp (PHI) | vs. WAS | 9 |
Stephen Vogt (OAK) | vs. MIN | 8 |
Russell Martin (TOR) | vs. NYY | 8 |
Dustin Garneau (COL) | vs. CIN | 8 |
After getting the day off on Monday, Wieters looks to extend his hit streak to an even 10 games. During his current stretch, he managed five consecutive multi-hit games and has raised his season batting average from .229 to .289. Rupp comes cheap with a bit of a tough opponent in Nationals SP Joe Ross, but he's one of the few bargain catchers who isn't a complete throw-away.
Martin has inched his way toward respectability, connecting for all three of his home runs in his last five games. Finally healthy, a turner is in the process of being turned. If Garneau gets the start for Colorado, he has the better power upside between him and teammate Tony Wolters.
Mid-Tier Targets
Name | Opponent | Value |
---|---|---|
Buster Posey (SF) | at ATL | 7 |
Yan Gomes (CLE) | vs. TEX | 7 |
Chris Herrmann (ARI) | vs. HOU | 6 |
Jonathan Lucroy (MIL) | vs. STL | 6 |
Yadier Molina (STL) | at MIL | 6 |
Wilson Ramos (WAS) | at PHI | 6 |
Blake Swihart (BOS) | at BAL | 5 |
Christian Vazquez (BOS) | at BAL | 5 |
Posey and Lucroy are the priciest options at the position and they've earned it through consistent play, but it might be wise to save a bit on names like Gomes or Ramos. Gomes' batting average is still atrocious, but his other production stats have been steadier. When he's getting hits, people are typically on base as his 25 RBIs can attest. He's been just as likely of putting up a zero, though.
Nothing to See Here
Name | Opponent | Value |
---|---|---|
Tony Wolters (COL) | vs. CIN | 4 |
David Ross (CHC) | vs. LAD | 4 |
A.J. Pierzynski (ATL) | vs. SF | 3 |
Austin Romine (NYY) | at TOR | 3 |
Hank Conger (TB) | at KC | 2 |
Bobby Wilson (TEX) | at CLE | 2 |
Jarrod Saltalamacchia (DET) | at LAA | 2 |
Ross should get the start with Cubs SP Jake Arrieta throwing and a lefty in Scott Kazmir on the mound for the Dodgers. He could be worth a look as salary relief, but don't expect much. Romine, similarly, should play instead of starter Brian McCann with Blue Jays LHP J.A. Happ facing him. Romine has some upside, but doesn't feature much power.
