Orioles' Duensing injures elbow while sitting in chair
One little shift in his chair has turned into a freak disabled-list stint for Brian Duensing.
The Baltimore Orioles reliever was placed on the 15-day DL Wednesday with left elbow inflammation, the team announced - an injury Duensing said was sustained while sitting in his bullpen chair during Monday's game in Texas.
Duensing didn't pitch in Monday's contest, but did play catch before the game and said nothing felt out of the ordinary. Then he went and sat down in the bullpen.
"To be honest, I just kind of rolled over on the chair, I just kind of rolled over and felt something kind of weird and next thing I know, it's swollen and couldn't move it," Duensing explained to reporters, according to Jon Meoli of the Baltimore Sun. "So, I was in the training room, and I didn’t even really do anything. That’s kind of also disappointing - a little freaky."
As a result of the freak injury, Duensing will now have to undergo arthroscopic surgery to remove cartilage chips from his elbow. He'll miss approximately four-to-eight weeks of action, though the 33-year-old is confident he can return by Aug. 1.
Duensing went on to note that this is his first elbow problem since undergoing Tommy John surgery in 2004.
Duensing has pitched in just seven games for Baltimore this season after being released by the Kansas City Royals in early May. He owns a 5.40 ERA over 6 2/3 innings pitched for Baltimore.
In a corresponding move, left-hander Ashur Tolliver was recalled by the Orioles from Triple-A Norfolk.
