Ibrahimovic announces retirement from Sweden duty after Euro 2016
Sweden captain Zlatan Ibrahimovic told reporters Tuesday he will quit international football following his country's run at Euro 2016.
It means the 34-year-old will not participate in Sweden's campaign at the Summer Olympics in Rio. He was originally included in the 35-man provisional squad for the event in August.
Sweden's match Wednesday against Belgium could theoretically be his last. His team needs a victory to have a chance of qualifying for the Round of 16.
"The last game for Sweden at the Euros will be my last game for Sweden. I hope it is not tomorrow," Ibrahimovic said Tuesday. "I will not play at the Olympics so I hope we go as far as possible here. Either way, I will not end disappointed. I am very proud to be captain of Sweden.
"I want to thank all the supporters who have helped me achieve what I have done. Wherever I go I will always bring the Swedish flag with me and be proud of it. I will never be disappointed."
Ibrahimovic is the Scandinavians' all-time leading scorer with 62 goals - second among active players. He's played in four consecutive European Championships, and could become the first to score in four of them.
His efforts in the Euro playoff against Denmark - which included a stunning free-kick that all but eliminated the Danes - confirmed Sweden would participate in this summer's tournament in France. Ibrahimovic hinted in November he could end his international career after putting Sweden "on the world map."
It's not the first time he called time on his spell with the national team. He left Sweden in October 2009, citing a loss of motivation after it failed to qualify for the 2010 World Cup.
But Ibrahimovic returned almost a year later, and manager Erik Hamren - who has also announced he will vacate his post at the end of the Euros - subsequently made the angular striker his captain.
