Rival execs believe Yankees will trade Miller, Chapman
Though general manager Brian Cashman refuses to wave the white flag, the reeling New York Yankees may give him no choice.
Losers of three of their last four and sitting nine games back in the division, the Yankees are on course to be sellers at the non-waiver trade deadline.
Despite his reluctance, Cashman does possess a number of key pieces he can dangle in hopes of a solid return, and some rival executives told Buster Olney of ESPN that they fully expect the Yankees to trade both Andrew Miller and Aroldis Chapman before the deadline.
Both left-handers are enjoying excellent seasons though Miller is viewed as the bigger piece since he's under contract through the 2018 season, but it means Cashman isn't forced to deal him unless he receives the package he desires.
Chapman, on the other hand, is set to hit free agency this winter and, as Olney notes, will likely serve as a cheaper alternative for teams not looking to go all in on acquiring Miller.
Three Chicago Cubs scouts were in attendance to see that duo pitch last week, while the San Francisco Giants have reportedly discussed going after Miller earlier this month.
Since signing with the Yankees prior to last season, Miller has been one of the best bullpen arms in the majors. Over the past two seasons, he owns a 1.79 ERA and 0.77 WHIP while striking out 163 in 95 1/3 innings.
Chapman had his season delayed following a one-month suspension for domestic violence, but has since gone on to craft a 3.15 ERA and 1.00 WHIP in 22 appearances, striking out 31 while converting 15 saves.
