Red Sox acquire veteran IF Hill from Brewers

The Boston Red Sox have acquired veteran infielder Aaron Hill along with cash considerations from the Milwaukee Brewers in exchange for minor-league second baseman Wendell Rijo and minor-league right-hander Aaron Wilkerson, the teams announced Thursday.
Hill, 34, has experienced a renaissance since joining the Brewers in the offseason from Arizona. The infielder struggled in 2015 but has hit .283/.359/.421 with eight home runs this season while splitting time between third base and second base. He recorded a three home-run game for the Brewers on May 7 against Cincinnati.
Though the Red Sox have their fair share of infielders, it's likely the right-handed hitting Hill could form a platoon with incumbent third baseman Travis Shaw, who's struggled against left-handers.
"We've been looking for a right-handed hitting infielder for really a while," president of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski told reporters. "We've been a little vulnerable to left-handed pitching. We felt it would (strengthen) us. Of course, he's played almost every day - has the abilities to play every day. We look at him more to complement the players that we have."
A 12-year veteran, Hill was named an All-Star while with the Blue Jays in 2009 and has collected a pair of Silver Slugger Awards. He owns a career .269/.324/.422 line with 159 home runs. Hill will be a free agent after this season.
Hill may be particularly happy about this trade due to his love of hitting at Fenway Park. He's slashed .308/.349/.490 with seven homers and 15 doubles in 52 career games at the venerable stadium.

Rijo, 20, was Boston's No. 17 prospect, according to MLB Pipeline. He's struggled in Double-A this season, though, posting a .186/.245/.266 line; the Brewers will likely send him to Single-A Brevard County, according to Todd Rosiak of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.
Wilkerson, a 6-foot-3 right-hander, owns a 2.14 ERA in 17 games split between Double-A Portland and Triple-A Pawtucket, while averaging 9.9 strikeouts per nine innings. The 27-year-old will likely be assigned to Milwaukee's Triple-A affiliate in Colorado Springs.
To make room on the 40-man roster for Hill, Boston designated outfielder Ryan LaMarre for assignment.
