Dimitri Payet's performances for France at Euro 2016 have attracted a host of Europe's elite clubs, and although West Ham United intends to "fight tooth and nail" to keep him, the outfit understands it could be tough.
After his initial struggles on the international stage, Payet has emerged as a key component of France's storm to the semi-finals, bagging three goals and two assists. It's this form, coupled with his superb debut season in the Premier League, that has giants of the game trying to tempt the 29-year-old.
"We'll fight tooth and nail to make sure Dimitri pulls on a claret and blue shirt next season," West Ham co-owner David Gold told The Sun.
"We want to improve our squad and Dimitri is an integral part of what we're trying to do. But we also must be realistic. If Barcelona or Real Madrid made a bid and he wanted to move there, it would be difficult to keep him."
Gold didn't reveal whether he'd received any offers for the player that moved to east London for around £10.6 million from Marseille last summer. The Daily Express' David Wright predicts the midfielder is now worth around £45 million.
"You can't have a great player like Dimitri and expect no one to make a bid, especially with the performances he's producing at the Euros," Gold continued.
"But the phone has not rung yet - although we know there's a chance it will once the tournament is over. We're not silly. Yet, let me be very clear, we would not welcome a call."
It could be a busy summer at West Ham, with the club seeking to bring in players befitting its new home, the Olympic Stadium.
"We're desperate to bring in quality players," said Gold.
"The old West Ham used to compete with teams like Burnley and West Brom for players, which gave us a better chance of signing our targets.
"Nowadays we are competing with Chelsea, Arsenal, Manchester United, or Manchester City."
Manuel Lanzini, Toni Martinez, Havard Nordtveit, Domingos Quina, and Sofiane Feghouli have already been confirmed as buys in Stratford this summer.
