Bellator MMA taking care of Santos' medical bills, giving him 'win' bonus
Bellator president Scott Coker has assured Evangelista "Cyborg" Santos and his fans that the promotion is looking out for him.
Santos suffered a frightening head injury in a knockout loss to Michael Page on Saturday at Bellator 158 in London, and his plight went viral after his ex-wife Cristiane Justino shared an image of him in the hospital on Instagram.
On Monday, Coker expressed his appreciation for Santos and he confirmed that Bellator MMA will be covering his medical bills as well as extra compensation for his work.
"I've been a huge fan of 'Cyborg' throughout the many years that he has fought for us," Coker told John Morgan of MMAjunkie. "The guy brings it every single time out, and that's all you can ask for from a fighter. That being said, you never want to see a fighter sustain an injury like that.
"Bellator representatives have been present with him at the hospital throughout this process, and we are taking care of any medical bills that he incurs. In addition, we are going to go ahead and pay 'Cyborg' his win bonus to help him find a little extra comfort throughout his recovery process, which we hope is a speedy one."
The exact amount of the win bonus is unknown.
Justino also started a GoFundMe page for Santos to provide financial aid as his fighting career will be on hold indefinitely while he recovers.
