West Ham threw away plans to sign Inter Milan full-back Davide Santon on a season-long loan Friday after the 25-year-old failed a medical, according to Sky Sports, citing sources.

The Hammers had agreed to take the former Newcastle man on a temporary basis for an initial £460,000 fee, with a view to a permanent deal for another £5 million.

But Santon will not be making a return to the Premier League with West Ham.

It's the second time this summer that a deal involving Santon has fallen apart. Negotiations between Sunderland and Inter broke down last month before the player could even conduct a medical.

West Ham has tried to secure a signing on the left flank ever since learning of the severity of Aaron Cresswell's knee injury, which will keep the Liverpool native on the sidelines for the remainder of 2016.

The Irons have also made alleged attempts to recruit Norwich City's Martin Olsson and Hull City's Andrew Robertson. Those bids proved unsuccessful, however.

West Ham has struggled to complete coups this summer for both incoming and outgoing players. The east London side has yet to convince AC Milan hit man Carlos Bacca of a transfer, while West Brom's potential £16-million move for Diafra Sakho collapsed on Thursday after the Senegalese striker reportedly failed his own check-up.
