Ray Allen still open to NBA return; Celtics, Bucks in the mix
While players like LeBron James and J.R. Smith remain unsigned, there's another, more readily available free agent to potentially keep an eye on.
Ray Allen, who hasn't stepped on an NBA court in more than two years, reiterated Saturday that a return is possible.
"For me, it's not 'Can I do it anymore?' It's how I feel after I do it. And yesterday, I felt great," Allen said from his camp in East Granby, Conn., as reported by the Hartford Courant's Dom Amore.
Allen was referencing a recent workout he had in New York.
"I was shooting, I was going through my routine just like I'd always done. Yeah, I was a little winded, but I was able to go through my routine like I'd always gone though my routine and I didn't feel like I'd missed any time in doing what I was doing."
Allen has already been linked to the Cleveland Cavaliers and Golden State Warriors this summer, the league's two repeat finalists.
"I said that I was interested because I never retired for a reason," Allen said Saturday. "I've been watching, seeing what teams have been doing, and I've been waiting to see if the opportunity presented itself where I think I could fit."
The future Hall of Famer also mentioned an interest in a potential return to Boston or Milwaukee, the two cities he spent the majority of his professional career in.
"I would love going back to those places if it worked out, because both teams are good, too. It doesn't necessarily have to be championship-or-bust for me to go back to the NBA."
As for whether the 41-year-old would join a team in the middle of the season, it doesn't sound like it, as Allen noted that if nothing pans out at the start of the year, he'll retire.
Allen, the NBA's all-time 3-point king, ranks 22nd on the league's all-time scoring list with 24,505 points over 18 seasons.
